Meet the Founder

Hello, and a very warm welcome.
I’m Holly Lyon-Hawk, founder of Gentle Endings, and it’s my privilege to walk beside families at one of life’s most tender thresholds — with steadiness, compassion, and deep respect for your wishes, your beliefs, and the love you carry for the person or animal you are saying goodbye to.

My work is rooted in a lived Christian faith centred on service, humility, and care for others. At the same time, we wholeheartedly support people of all faiths, cultures, and beliefs — or none at all.

Our approach is not about doctrine.
It is about dignity, kindness, and honouring what matters most to you.

Through Gentle Endings, we offer thoughtful, personalised alternatives to conventional funerals, supporting you from before death, through the final days, and into the funeral itself — so you never feel alone or rushed.
How we work
Most funeral services are built around fixed packages and standard templates.

We work differently.

Rather than offering “gold, silver, or bronze” options, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all funerals. A life isn’t standardised — and a funeral shouldn’t be either.

Where others start with packages, we start with people.

We begin with a blank sheet of paper and work alongside you to gently create something truly personal.
That might be a traditional church service, a natural burial, a gathering at home, or a bespoke Celebration of Life in a place that holds meaning.

Whatever form it takes, it is shaped with care, flexibility, and intention — guided by your needs, your values, and your wishes.

Ceremonial Care of the Body
A central part of our work is ceremonial care of the body — an ancient, family-centred practice that was commonplace until only around a hundred years ago.

Before death care became institutionalised, families and communities would gently tend to their loved ones themselves, supported by those around them. We help restore this tradition in a way that feels calm, safe, and fully supported.

Some families simply choose to be present and bear witness.
Others may wish to take part more actively — washing hands and feet, bathing the body, anointing with oils such as frankincense and myrrh, brushing hair, tending to nails, and helping with dressing.

There is no expectation and no pressure.
You are involved only as much or as little as feels right.

It is a quiet, unhurried time to honour the physical form that has carried your loved one through life.
A moment to continue caring after death.
Space for blessings or prayers, for thanks, for touch, for tears.

Often, it gently helps the reality of death settle into the heart — not through shock or separation, but through love and presence.

About me
As an End-of-Life Practitioner for both people and pets, and a multi-award-winning holistic funeral director, I bring many years of hands-on, practical, and ceremonial experience to this work. I lead Gentle Endings alongside a trusted circle of like-hearted professionals who share the same values of gentleness, integrity, and respect.

I am the author of A Gentle Goodbye with Cinnamon the Rabbit, written to support families facing the loss of a beloved animal companion.

I also serve on the committee for the Association of Green Funeral Directors and the Embracing Life Through Facing Death collective, and as a trustee for End of Life Doula UK charity.

My path here has included veterinary nursing, wildlife sculpting, and ultimately funeral directing and end of life doulaing — each step deepening my understanding of life, loss, and the quiet beauty of caring well for the dead.

It would be an honour for us to support you — and for me personally to guide you — through this journey with clarity, steadiness, and heart.
